Metuchen’s Borough Council will consider banning smoking in borough parks and municipal properties at the next meeting.
Councilwoman Allison Inserro, council’s liaison with the board of health, said the board was upset Council has not passed rules banning smoking in borough owned areas.
She requested further discussion on some form of smoking ban on borough property at the next council meeting, which was agreed by other council members.
Along with health reasons, clearing away the smoke around town could benefit Metuchen in another way. Municipalities that establish smoking bans can quality for points under the Sustainable Jersey certification program.
Municipalities need to accrue a certain amount of points before they become certified. Points are built up by programs that beneficially affect peoples’ health and wellness and the environment, according to the group’s website.
Registered towns get “priority access” and notification about incentives and grants and become eligible for Sustainable Jersey Small Grants Program.
